Esteban Loaiza is known by many for playing in the MLB for various teams including the White Sox, Rangers, Pirates, and Blue Jays. After pitching for eight different MLB teams over the course of 14 years, Loaiza seems to have gotten himself into a bit of trouble recently. Although this isn’t his first run-in with the law as he was charged with DUI back 2006, he now is likely going to be facing some pretty harsh penalties for the crime he is being recognized for. According to USA Today, Loaiza was arrested as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation. He was said to have been driving a vehicle that police believed was being used to smuggle drugs and was pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. When police began searching the vehicle, they found a “sophisticated aftermarket compartment used to conceal contraband.” That led officials to conduct a search of his home where they recovered roughly 20 kilograms of cocaine that is valued at $500,000. The home where the drugs were found was located just “steps” away from a preschool which isn’t going to help him when his case is placed in front of a judge.

While it has been reported that the drugs are still being tested, Loaiza is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday and his bail has been set at $200,000. Given that Loaiza no longer plays for an MLB team, Univision has questioned whether the former baseball player is going to be able to come up with the bail money. Loaiza was once married to the late singer Jenni Rivera but she had filed for divorce from him in the months before her death in a tragic plane accident. During the time Loaiza played baseball, he made more than $43.7 million so hopefully, he has enough to retain one of the best California criminal defense attorneys available.

Whenever a person is facing felony drug charges, it is crucial they hire a criminal defense lawyer to represent them throughout the duration of their case. The charges Loaiza is up against could put him behind bars for years, that is unless his lawyer is able to push for a reduction in penalties once he is formally charged with the crime.

Should I retain a criminal justice lawyer if I am arrested for possession of drugs?

Although Loaiza was caught with a large amount of drugs which will definitely increase the number of charges he is faced with, anyone who has been arrested for possession of drugs, no matter how small the amount might be, should hire a lawyer. If you want to be sure your rights are protected as a citizen and that you aren’t charged for a crime you didn’t commit, you are going to need a skilled criminal attorney working on your side. Not always is the justice system fair and some individuals are penalized more harshly than others who commit the same crime.

So, rather than risk going into your hearing alone and being unreasonably sentenced, let find you a local criminal lawyer in your area who can provide you with the advice and assistance you are going to need.
